Gutters 101: What Are Seamless Gutters?

US. Exterior

If the term “seamless gutters” doesn’t mean anything to you, you’re not alone. This gutter type hasn’t been around nearly as long as some of its more tenured rivals, but within the last few years, seamless gutters have seen their popularity increase exponentially. Today, 75% of all gutters installed nationwide are seamless gutters. So what are seamless gutters, and why are they in such high demand? The gutter installation experts at U.S. Exterior by Seidel have the answers.

What are seamless gutters?

Also known as “seamless rain gutters” and “continuous rain gutters”, seamless gutters are exactly what their name implies – seamless. But they’re also so much more. From an aesthetic point of view, seamless gutters are a lot easier on the eye than traditional seamed gutters. Plus they come in a variety of colors, allowing homeowners to make these gutters a part of their house’s overall curb appeal.

In terms of functionality, the absence of a seam significantly reduces the chance of a leak developing in a seamless gutter system. Seamless gutters also incorporate a baked-on enamel finish that never requires panting. These cutting-edge systems must be installed by professionals, who fabricate the gutters onsite in order to meet the exact measurements for a given home. However, despite the complexities involved with fabrication and install, most jobs only take one day to complete.

If you’re interested in a gutter replacement project that sees your old gutter system swapped out for seamless gutters, we should be 100% transparent. Believe it or not, seamless gutters actually have seams. However, as you might have guessed, these seams are minimal, existing only at the downspout outlets and the corners. The good news is, our gutter replacement contractor serving Lake Forest and Long Grove takes extra care with these areas. We ensure that they’re fastened securely, and we incorporate a sealant that boosts these seams’ leak resistance and overall stability.

These “seam” areas represent a very small percentage of an entire seamless gutter system, the majority of which is in fact seamless and continuous. This carries the dual advantage of rendering the system not just incredibly strong, but also much more appealing visually.

As previously mentioned, installing a seamless gutter system only takes a day. The contractor arrives at the house with a seamless gutter machine and gutter material in your preferred color. The machine allows each piece to be measured individually, creating custom-sized pieces of continuous gutter. Regarding attachment, there are two options to consider. One is called “spike and ferrule”, in which a hollow tube (the ferrule) is inserted into the gutter to prevent bending. Once this is done, a long spike is driven through the ferrule through the gutter (at the top), and into the wood fascia board.

The other option, and the one we recommend, is called the “hidden bracket”. In this scenario, a bracket interlocks into the gutter and then attaches to the roof, beneath the shingles. This choice offers better attachment strength and a cleaner look.
